Mobile Telephone Support for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Research and Case Study of Concussion Care After Combat Trauma
Event date:
15 April 2010

Significant numbers of military personnel have been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), commonly called concussion. This webinar will feature two presentations on the use of telephone technology to support care to military service members with known or suspected mTBI. Jo Ann Brockway, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor from the Department of Rehabilitative Medicine at the University of Washington will discuss a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of an individualized scheduled telephone support (ISTS). Using problem-solving therapy, the ISTS intervention focuses on symptom- and self-management to address the physical, cognitive, and psychological symptoms associated with mTBI and co-occurring depression and/or anxiety. Jeanette D. Rasche, BS, MS and Holly Pavliscsak, BS, MHSA will discuss a mobile telephony-based messaging system called mCare. The "m" in mCare stands for mobile. The project explores the potential of mobile devices, specifically personal cell phones for use in the Military Healthcare System. Security and privacy considerations, business process, and pilot results of mCare will be highlighted.
